John and his siblings were raised in North Carolina by their parents, Charles Mack and Alice Mack. He pursued a degree in History on a football scholarship at Duke University.
Mack commenced his professional journey at Morgan Stanley as a salesman in 1972, gradually ascending the ranks. He took charge of the Worldwide Taxable Fixed Income Division from 1985 to 1992 and served on the board of directors from 1987. His association with Morgan Stanley continued as he assumed various leadership roles, ultimately becoming the President. However, he parted ways with the company due to conflicts with then-CEO Phil Purcell in 1997.
His career also included a stint at Credit Suisse from 2001 to 2005. In 2005, Mack returned to Morgan Stanley as CEO and Chairman of the Board. During the financial market crisis, concerns arose regarding Morgan Stanley’s independent survival, leading to talks of potential mergers with banks like Wachovia and involvement of other financial institutions. Eventually, Morgan Stanley sealed a deal with the Japanese bank MUFG. Mack retired from the CEO position in early 2010.
Post-retirement, in 2012, he joined Kohlberg Kravis Roberts as a Senior Advisor. He briefly worked with the Russian state-owned oil company Rosneft but left when the US imposed sanctions on the company and its CEO Igor Sechin.
