Nelson Mandela married three times. His first wife was Evelyn Ntoko Mase, a nurse. They were married from 1944 to 1957 and had four children together.

His second wife was Winnie Madikizela, a social worker and anti-apartheid activist. They were married from 1958 to 1996 and had two children together.

His third wife was Graça Machel, the widow of Samora Machel, the former president of Mozambique. They were married from 1998 until Mandela’s death in 2013.

Mandela was born Rolihlahla Mandela in the village of Mvezo in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was a local chief and counselor to the monarch. Mandela’s mother was his father’s third wife.

His father was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela (1880-1930), principal counselor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. Nonqaphi Nosekeni (1880-1968), a member of the amaMpemvu clan of the Xhosa was his mother.
