Rickie Fowler and other Big Names miss the 2023 Masters

Publish date: 2024-06-10

The sub-100 player field of the 2023 Masters has left big names like Rickie Fowler from the PGA and DP World Tours out of the iconic drive down Magnolia Lane. Despite the absence of some prominent players, the 2023 Masters promises to be an exciting tournament with a strong representation from LIV Golf.

Unless they’re a past Masters champion, a Major champion in the last five years, or in the world’s top 50, it’s difficult for players to qualify for The Masters. The sub-100 player field welcomes 18 LIV players this year, but several significant names from the PGA and DP World Tours won’t be participating.

On the other hand, the LIV Golf players will make up a significant portion of the field with a total of 18 players participating. The upcoming 2023 Masters championship is highly anticipated and is expected to showcase a stunning exhibition of golf.

Non-LIV players from the PGA and DP World Tours who didn’t make the cut

The likes of Paul Casey, Lee Westwood, Marc Leishman, and Ian Poulter from the LIV Golf missed out on the 2023 Masters, while Rickie Fowler failed to qualify with his current world ranking of 55th. Fowler’s absence from the Augusta National tournament continues for the third straight year.

Moreover, Lucas Herbert’s recent loss to Rory McIlroy in the WGC-Match Play’s last-16 meant he would miss his second appearance at the Masters. Webb Simpson, a former World No. 4, failed to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2011, having dropped out of the top 140 in the world rankings.

The Valspar Championship was the last tournament for Simpson before the Masters, but unfortunately, he missed the cut. Kuchar, a nine-time winner on the PGA Tour, has played at Augusta 15 times, but he will miss his second consecutive Masters. Joel Dahmen, currently ranked 99th in the world, will also miss his first Masters tournament this year.

Despite winning two DP World Tour events in the last year, Thorbjorn Olesen has not qualified for the Masters, despite having played in the tournament three times before. Victor Perez, ranked 62nd in the world and winner of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January, also failed to qualify for this year’s tournament. Olesen famously defeated Jordan Spieth 5&4 at the 2018 Ryder Cup.
