A year in a jail in Dubai has been the sentence for Trey Songz’ bodyguard, after he intervened to shield the Grammy-nominated R&B star from a potential assault.
Cornell Whitfield, the bodyguard, found himself in this situation while fulfilling his duty to protect the singer from a man who confronted them as they were leaving the FIVE Palm Jumeirah hotel.
Following an altercation where the guest displayed aggressive behavior by swearing and gesturing, Whitfield claims he intervened by gently tapping the man’s face to pacify the situation.
This incident seemingly resolved, Whitfield returned to the US without further concern, only to be arrested upon his return to Dubai two months later due to a filed criminal complaint by the man he had tapped.
In an attempt to drop the assault allegations, Whitfield was requested to pay £49,000 ($60,000) to his alleged victim, a payment he was unable to make, resulting in a one-year jail sentence.
Currently on bail, Whitfield is prohibited from leaving the United Arab Emirates, much to the distress of his family in Miami, Florida, eager for his return.
Whitfield has previously provided protection for clients such as NFL sports stars Trevon Diggs and Deebo Samuels, as well as the likes of Lil Kim, Junior Combs, and Quavo.
Accompanying Trey Songz as part of his security detail, Whitfield found himself in this situation as they left the luxury hotel to go to a club.
They were confronted by an aggressive Jordanian national, who began shouting, swearing, and gesturing at the group.
In an attempt to calm the situation, Whitfield tapped the man’s face, as later revealed by hotel CCTV footage, and subsequently returned to the US with the rest of TreySongz’s group.
It was upon his return to Dubai in August that he was arrested, despite having evidence and witnesses to support his actions, due to the persistence of the alleged victim.
This has led to an appeal being lodged against the sentence by his lawyer, with former clients now expressing intent to aid in raising the required funds.
Whitfield expressed his perspective, emphasizing his intention to diffuse the situation and his desire to reunite with his family, highlighting the distress caused by the situation.
